Antioxidants Vitamin C

When it comes to beneficial antioxidants, vitamin C is high up on the list. This vitamin plays a role in immune system health, collagen production and is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants fight dangerous free radicals which are molecules with destructive properties. Free radicals attack healthy cells and are linked to a wide range of diseases including arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants bind to free radicals which neutralizes their harmful effects. In addition, antioxidants also help repair cells that have already sustained damage.


One thing you should know about vitamin C is that the human body cannot produce this vitamin naturally. Other animals that cannot produce vitamin C surprisingly include guinea pigs and primates. Because we cannot make our own vitamin C, we must get it from fruits, vegetables and supplements. The good news is that doing so is very easy. Rich sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwi fruit, broccoli, leafy greens, red and green peppers, rose hips and many more herbs, fruits and vegetables. If you feel you're not getting enough vitamin C in your diet you may want to consider supplementation.

You should know that some people may require more vitamin C than others. If you are fighting a cold or other illness you may want to up your intake. If you smoke, or have ever smoked, extra vitamin C is recommended also. Many medical experts will tell you that it is safe to consume up to 1000 mg of vitamin C per day. While this vitamin has low toxicity too much vitamin C can be harmful. Also the body can only process a certain amount of vitamin C with the excess being excreted in urine. If you are taking supplements break them up throughout the day rather than taking a large dose at one time for maximum absorption and effectiveness.

On the subject of top antioxidants, vitamin C should be used alongside other beneficial nutrients like vitamin A, vitamin B complex and vitamin E. The best way to get the right range of nutrients is to eat a varied diet rich in fruits and vegetables. If your diet is less than ideal you can ask your doctor whether or not a supplement is recommended for you. For some, supplements can fill in nutritional gaps and provide protection against free radical damage. However, getting your nutrients from food sources is the optimum way to go.
