One rich source of beneficial antioxidants are berries. It is thought that berries antioxidants are at the top of the list when it comes to produce. In addition to practicing healthy habits, consume antioxidant rich foods. Blueberries are the top source of antioxidants when compared with 40 other common produce items. The compound that gives blueberries their color is a powerful antioxidant. Other rich sources of antioxidants in berries include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries and acai.

The antioxidants in these foods destroy free radicals by attaching to them and neutralizing their destructiveness. In addition antioxidants can repair damage that has already been done. To make the most of these beneficial substances, aim for 5 to 9 servings of fruit and vegetables every day. If this is difficult for you to achieve try making smoothies with fresh or frozen fruit. A splash of orange juice, some ice, a few cups of berries and yogurt blended together makes a delicious and healthy smoothie. Berries can even be added to salads or used to make sweet vinaigrette dressing.

When it comes to berries, antioxidants aren't the only reason to eat them. They are delicious and contain lots of other nutrients. In addition to berries, you should strive to eat other fruits like apples, pineapple, pomegranate and oranges. Vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli, carrots, red peppers and sweet potatoes are also rich in antioxidants. If you are able, you might even want to add one glass of red wine with dinner and a square of dark chocolate for dessert. These are other great sources of healthy antioxidants.
