Food With Antioxidants
To make the most of your diet, eat lots of antioxidant rich foods. Choosing foods with antioxidants is easier than you might think because there are lots of appealing choices. Before we discuss various foods and beverages, let's first take a look at how antioxidants work. Every living creature, including human beings, are subjected to free radicals. They are naturally produced by everyday chemical processes as well as by external factors like cigarette smoking, sun exposure and even exercise. While you can't avoid them, you can keep them in check and protect against the damage they can cause.
Free radicals cause oxidation in the body much like rust does to metal. Free radicals can damage healthy cells causing mutations that may lead to conditions like heart disease, cancer, arthritis and more. The good news is that antioxidants fight free radicals and help repair cells that have already sustained damage. Antioxidants bind together with the free radicals which neutralizes their destructive power. The problem is that many people don't get enough antioxidants because they make the wrong dietary choices.
For example, many people eat processed convenience foods, found on the inner aisles of supermarkets. Processed foods often contain lots of white flour and sugar and may lack in nutritional value. Your better bet is to stick to the outer aisles which is where the whole foods are like produce, meat, fish and dairy. There are many great sources of antioxidants. Colorful produce should be high on your list. Berries, citrus fruits, pomegranate and apples are all good choices. Also you should eat lots of deep greens like kale and spinach, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower and orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes. Legumes like black beans and red beans are also sources of antioxidants.
In addition to choosing foods with antioxidants you should also aim for beverages with antioxidants. Tea is a great choice, with white and green tea at the top of the list. You may also want to check out red tea, also called rooibos tea. Coffee contains antioxidants, and let's not forget about red wine. There are some ways to increase absorption of antioxidants, such as adding a splash of citrus or pomegranate juice to tea or wine. As you can see, there are many ways to incorporate antioxidants into your diet.
