Fruit Antioxidants
Everyone needs antioxidants in their daily diet. Although the body naturally produces antioxidant enzymes it is still necessary to consume foods and beverages rich in antioxidants to prevent damage from free radicals and help repair damage that has already been done. Fruit antioxidants are some of the best choices when it comes to what to eat. There are many fruits that are rich sources of many different antioxidants. If you are unfamiliar with how free radicals and antioxidants actually work it's a good idea to get the basic information.
Free radicals are reactive molecules found in the body. They are naturally occurring and cannot be prevented. However sometimes free radicals can overrun your body and cause damage to healthy cells. It is thought that free radical damage may play a role in the development of certain diseases and conditions like heart disease, cancer and arthritis. Free radicals can even have a detrimental effect on the look of your skin and accelerate the aging process. Antioxidants bind to the free radicals negating their harmful effects and help repair damaged cells. This is why it is crucial to make sure you're getting enough, and one way to do that is to eat plenty of fruit.
You may have heard about Superfoods, which is a group of foods that are thought to be especially healthy for the body. One such food is blueberries. The pigment that gives these berries their blue color is called anthocyanin and is a powerful antioxidant. According to a study performed by the USDA at Tufts University, blueberries contain the most beneficial antioxidants as compared to 40 other common produce items. Also ranking high on the list were Concord grape juice and strawberries. Other top sources of antioxidants in fruit are cranberries, pomegranate and acai.
Other top sources of fruit antioxidants are raspberries, blackberries, cherries, plums and apples. It is clear based on recent research that berries, especially blueberries, are the best source of antioxidants when it comes to fruit. In addition to eating lots of berries you should also strive to consume antioxidant rich vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, red peppers and other colorful produce. Although the average American doesn't get enough produce, it is quite easy to manage five or more servings a day because one serving equals only one cup of fruit or vegetables. If you're having trouble with your intake you may want to try fruit and vegetable smoothies and juices. Or, ask your doctor whether he or she recommends an antioxidant supplement.
