Red Wine Antioxidants
There has been much attention paid to red wine antioxidants recently. If you love wine, you will be elated to learn that red wine may actually improve your health. It appears the benefits of red wine are due to reservatrol, a substance that works to thin the blood and repair free radical damaged cells. It also contains various antioxidants that also help repair damage and attach to destructive free radicals, eliminating their ability to harm your cells. While you can't get rid of all free radicals (nor should you) you can dramatically reduce the damage sustained with an antioxidant rich diet.
When talking about the health benefits of red wine it is important to mention the importance of safety and moderation. Experts advise no more than one glass per day for women and two for men. The dangers of excess alcohol consumption are many and include not only liver damage but heart disease, stomach ulcers, excessive acid reflux, high blood pressure and other undesirable conditions. So if you consume excessive amounts of red wine you will be negating the health benefits while actually putting yourself at risk. To stay safe and get the most health benefits from red wine aim to drink approximately one glass per day.
The reason red wine is favored over white wine and other types of alcohol is because of its ingredients and how it is made. Red wine is made from antioxidant rich grapes with the skins on and fermented which increases the beneficial components in the wine. According to researchers the reported healthiest red wine is the Pinot Noir variety. Pinot Noir contains twice the reservatrol as other varieties of red wine. This is because of the type of grapes used. So if you are going to drink red wine Pinot Noir is your healthiest bet.
Some people love the taste of red wine and really enjoy drinking it. Others find red wine unpleasant to the palate. If you are in the second group but want the red wine antioxidants, sip a small glass of red wine with dinner or dessert. Try pairing it with a square of dark chocolate for even more antioxidants. If you still can't deal with the taste try a wine spritzer. Mix the red wine of your choice with a sweet purple juice like pomegranate or concord grape. Then add club soda or ginger ale for a slight fizz. Many people who dislike the taste of straight wine can enjoy a spritzer and still get the benefits.
